Give outdoor living a little more shelter

Define a dining area, soften strong sunlight or create a covered place beside the house. A pergola or veranda can make the garden more useful when its position and specification suit the way you want to use it.

Choose the right kind of cover

Shade and rain protection are different requirements. Before comparing systems, decide whether you want an open architectural feature, adjustable shade or a more permanent covered area. We confirm the currently available options and their limitations for the project.

Open pergola

Defines a seating or dining area and gives the garden structure. An open roof should not be confused with a weatherproof enclosure.

Adjustable roof options

Louvred or other adjustable systems can offer more control over shade and airflow. Operating guidance, drainage and weather limits are system-specific.

Veranda or glazed cover

A covered area beside the house can connect doors and outdoor seating. Attachment, roof pitch, gutters and the effect on light inside need careful consideration.

Position the structure around the furniture

Posts should not prevent chairs moving back or interrupt the main route through the garden. We consider the furnished area, the opening of nearby doors and the space needed around the structure.

Sun, prevailing weather, privacy and the view from the house influence the position. A freestanding feature and a wall-mounted veranda will affect the garden differently.

Coordinate the frame colour with glazing and the surrounding surfaces. Keep the design restrained enough that the structure complements the home rather than dominates it.

Support and drainage are part of the design

The supporting ground, fixing locations and any connection to the house must be suitable for the chosen system. A deck surface alone should not be assumed to provide an adequate fixing base.

Roof water needs a planned route. Gutters, downpipes and the surrounding surface levels should work together, with access for clearing and maintenance.

Any required permissions, boundary considerations or structural input should be established for the actual installation before work starts.

Agree the optional features early

Lighting, screens, heating or powered controls may be options within a selected system. Availability, safe clearances, electrical requirements and installation responsibilities should be checked before they are included.

Adding side panels changes how the space feels and performs. Do not assume an outdoor cover becomes a fully insulated room simply by enclosing it.

We can coordinate decking and the surrounding layout, with a quotation that separates the structure, preparation, services and finishing work.

Pergola and veranda questions

Can it be attached to the house?

That depends on the wall, roofline, openings and selected system. The survey establishes whether a wall-mounted or freestanding approach is suitable.

Will it keep out all rain?

Performance depends on the specific roof and side arrangement, the weather and the manufacturer’s operating guidance. An open-sided structure is not the same as an enclosed room.

Can it be installed over existing paving or decking?

The surface can sometimes remain, but the support and fixing requirements still need to be assessed. Preparation and any foundation work should be included in the scope.

What maintenance will it need?

Follow the selected system’s instructions for cleaning, moving parts, roof panels and drainage. Keep gutters clear and arrange safe access rather than walking on an unsuitable roof.

SHELTERED OUTDOOR LIVING

Compare the structure, shade and atmosphere

Fixed and adjustable louvre systems can create very different outdoor spaces. Consider shelter, lighting, furniture and the adjoining surface together.
